Adoption Fair: Room 101, Pregnant Biotches: Room 107

Today, my husband and I took the first step toward adoption. We attended a local adoption fair, put on by resolve.org. There were agencies, adoption lawyers, support groups, and case workers present to help answer questions and, of course, sell their services. But hey, if they are going to help us find our baby, I'll pay 'em. Gladly.

It was actually a very beneficial event for us to attend. We found a lawyer that we like a lot and also found an agency that felt comfortable. The agency has a free information session coming up and we're going to attend. We scheduled a free consult with the attorney. There was also a panel on peoples' experience with adoption and a very nice lady who adopted in December 2006 was there. Afterward, I asked her if she would mind e-mail correspondance when I had questions. Turns out that they live less than ten minutes from us and she was so sweet, offering all sorts of good suggestions and even offering to show us their online profile that got them their 10 month old son.

I think we are definitely on the path. We are going to continue to work with our RE, but I think it is time to open ourselves up to new options. It feels good. I am a person of action. I need to be moving forward. For the first time in a long time, I feel that we are putting one foot in front of the other, not just stalled in one place.

But now the reason for my title. Sometimes, stupid fertiles and their superior attitudes can really put a kink in a girl's day. My husband had to use the restroom, so we stepped outside into the atrium outside of the fair. I should also mention that this took place at a hospital that is known for their maternity department. Across the hall was a Getting Ready For Baby Class. As I was waiting, sitting on a bench looking over the fliers that I had gathered, I watched as pregnant couple after pregnant couple walked by. Apparently, it was the first class and they didn't know exactly where Room 107 was. They would stop outside the Adoption Fair and then realize that their room was around the corner. You would not believe some of the things that I heard these fertiles say as they realized their mistake and hustled off to babyland. Remember that there were refreshments being served in the atrium for the Adoption Fair, so potential adoptive couples were milling around. These sentences were said at a normal conversational level or one of those fakey stage whispers. You would have had to have been deaf not to hear them.

A few of the winners deserve to be mentioned here so that our collective blood can boil together:

Husband to wife, "Wow, I'm glad that we don't have to worry about adoption. What a pain in the ass."

Wife to husband, "Oh. This isn't our room. This is for people that can't have babies."

Wife to husband, "I don't think this is it. There aren't any pregnant women here." Her husband sees the sign proclaiming the Adoption Fair and replies, "There aren't any pregnant women because they have to adopt their babies."

Husband to wife, "Why do they need an adoption fair? The hospital should support the people that are actually having babies."

Yeah. I hope these people have health babies and all that jazz. But I really hope that they got a speeding ticket, a hair in their lunch, or maybe even a hemorrhoid or two today. I really do.

HOLY CANOLI!!! People just need to think BEFORE they are allowed to speak ..... Seriously. I am glad that it was informative for you and hubby though. We are trying to start the foster/adoption program here - but the classes are at night and hubster works nights right now - good luck to you

I tell ya, people make me sick. I can't believe the things you heard, it's not fair....well maybe they'll know what we're going through because you just never know, secondary IF could be in their future for their negative comments!!

Anyways, I'm thrilled for you that you found someone so close to network with! That's fantastic! :)

Fertile people can be so clueless sometimes. I think the hospital could've been more sensitive in their planning though too. I'm glad that you feel that you're making progress. I am excited for you and hope that things will continue to work. Who knows, you always hear of the stories of couples who adopt and later become pregnant.

Oh. My.

I am speechless. And if I were in your position, would have considered resorting to violence.

Only the mental kind, like wishing baldness and biblical plagues upon them- you know, storms of locusts and rains of blood and frogs.

GAH!

I'm glad you found someone to talk to, and some quality professionals to help pave the way to your dream. That's fantastic news!

Oh. My. Goodness. I try really, really hard to think the best of people. (Known as keeping my positive cap on.) But for crying out loud-those people just took the positive cap off my head, ripped it into tiny shreds and then stomped all over it. And to think they are reproducing...Yikes!

In another vein, however, I'm exciting for you to be pursuing the adoption route. I, too, always like to feel as though I am moving forward, so I am sure this was an awesome experience for you. However things unfold, it will be the right thing for you and that is wonderful!

As my gay best friend would say ... damn breeders.

People are so ignorant.

I'm glad you were able to get some good information, though. Especially making a connection with someone who's been through adoption.

Ugh....people and their mouths never cease to amaze me. In my perfect world I like to imagine a scene such as this occurred during the class....

-Wife leaves to go to bathroom and returns having tucked dress into underwear unknowingly and shows her bum and her nasty granny panties to all. And of course she's sitting in the front row...so everyone gets to see the show.

That is just unbelievable! The nerve of some people. Even if I was a fertile person, I don't think I would ever say something like that. Idiots.

I'm glad that you found the adoption fair to be helpful. Too bad "those people" had to be so rude about it!
Blech!

Wow. Some people are just morons. Poor little babies, only have that gene pool and environment to draw from...

Ummm... Yeah. I'm still having trouble digesting HOW insensitive people can be. I knew that fertile people could be insensitive and give assvice, but I just didn't think they would make down-right MEAN comments that could be overheard by others... I'm so sorry you had to be present to hear their stupid comments. =(

I wish you the best on the adoption front!
