For Our Next Trick

I am a medical freak of nature. I already knew this, I guess, but it always catches me by surprise for some reason.

I am cycle day 5 of my suppression cycle. Like the good, compliant patient that I am, I had my Day 2 bloodwork and started my birth control pills.

I went in today and Dr. M proclaimed my 3.4 FSH and 30 Estradol levels "perfect." However, when she went in with the dildo cam to get a baseline follicle count. . . we went from picture perfect to "uh oh." Apparently, one of the magic tricks that my body can do is ovulate even when on birth control. This actually makes some sense, since our first pregnancy happened when I was on the pill. My husband thought I had just missed a pill or something, but after seven years, I was pretty dependable. At least my guilt from that is assuaged.

The problem is, of course, that I have to have a suppression cycle. We have now increased my bcp to 2 times a day (Crazy Town, here I come) in the hopes that my lead follicle "will shrivel up and die" (that is a quote from Dr. M).

They actually had me take the second pill right then and there. No messing around. Dr. M did manage to tell me that less than 4% of women will continue to ovulate in the presence of birth control, so once again, I have taken the statistical bullet. Lovely.

If this follicle doesn't shrivel up and die, then we will have to move forward to January. We will know at next Saturday's ultrasound.

Well, at least it's never boring being a statistical freak of nature.

Gad, your follicle should have a chat to my follicles. They can shrivel up and die like nobody's business!

Your ovaries sound a little like mine - uncooperative, stubborn and they have a mind of their own.

I hope it shrivels soon.

I've never wished this upon anyone, but I hope the magical little follicle fella curls back up and realizes he's not wanted.

Yikes for 2 bcp's a day. Remember that deep breathing thing you mentioned a few days ago, it might come in handy. :)

As usual, I'll keep our friend hope for you.

Katie, let's switch ovaries, okay? (At least for the time being, until you need yours to produce.) I am on day who-knows-what of meds and yes, it looks like I'll be having another 40 day-ish medicated cycle to get anything big enough to sneeze at. I will gladly trade you-we would both be calmer ladies. :) I'm cheering on your BCP. Sock it to the follie!

Oh Katie... Wow. I am sorry. I hope that the TWO pills are just what your body needs to get the message, "Hey, DONT ovulate!"

I'd never been on the pill, so my suppression cycle (which was 26 days) ended up producing a "hormonally active follicle." Meaning, on baseline day (stimulating drugs were to start the next day), they saw a 15mm (I think) follicle & my E2 was 90. Bad! Had to aspirate it. Lovely. The awesome thing about your clinic is that they CHECK you WHILE you're taking bcps! So glad to know you caught this early.

Keep us updated!

Wow, I can't believe I'm wishing death to your follies but here I am! That just sucks. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you on Saturday.

Thanks for your comment. Actually, with this military clinic, we can only use frozen sperm with IUIs, not IVF. Just some rule they have. They do not keep anything frozen there, though (no sperm or embryos) so I'd have to research out where to do it all I'm guessing somewhere in Atlanta if I was to do IUIs while he's away (which I'm not sure I do???).

Gotta go leave for a week in NC, but catch you later (i'll have my computer!)

I can't freaking believe this. It's like your ovaries are rooting for you to have a baby and they won't take no for an answer.

So, Follicle:

I know you're just trying to show everyone that you're awesome but seriously, this is WAY OUT OF LINE.
Shrivel! Die! Trust Katie!

When she says No Follicles This Month, she means it.
