Road Trip

Will and I are about to embark on our first trip together. We are travelling three hours south to my hometown to see Grandpa B and Grandma J. Oh, and my sister and her fiance, who is leaving to get married in Hawaii tomorrow. I also have a couple of girlfriends that want to meet Will, and some of my mom's friends are clamoring, too. I have a feeling it is going to be a busy trip.

M has to work, so I am flying solo (well, duo, with Will). I am a little nervous. I am planning to put him in the car right after he eats and right before he (usually) takes him morning nap. He doesn't usually sleep for three hours, but I am hoping that the car ride will lull him to taking a bit longer of a nap. For the most part, it is fairly populated along the drive, and it's all along a major freeway. So, if he does wake up a bit early, we can always make a pit stop.

I am bringing his travel swing and his bassinet (the top detaches from the base) which is what he is currently sleeping in (we have the top in the crib). I have packed tons of extra outfits and a whole package of diapers. My parents have raised three babies and so they will be a ton of help. There are lots of stores where I am going in case I need anything.

But I am still a bit nervous. Wish us luck!

I'm sure it will be much better than you expect! Just last week we traveled back "home" 350 miles to southern California to visit family, and yes, it was a road trip. Andy did far better than we expected. He slept most of the way, or kept himself otherwise occupied. We stopped just once in each direction for a diaper change and feeding. Ultimately each let of the trip took us about 6 hours.

I hope you have lots of fun showing off your precious son!

Good luck! I hope Will sleeps most of the way or is at least soothed by the motion of the car.

How wonderful that you and Will are going to see your family.

Good luck and have a safe journey!!! Most babies sleep in the car, so don't worry.

Having had to take some more lengthy car jaunts with Lil Pumpkin, my advice/tips:

* plan your trvale around baby's schedule - get them in the car prior to nap, so if they cry you only have to hear it for a while before they fall asleep

* PEE BEFORE YOUR GET IN THE CAR - cause remember, you ain't got no one to sit in the car with baby when YOU have to go, LOL!

* take your time - so what if you need to stop 4 times in 3 hours, who cares?!

* try out different types of music to amuse the baby - mine likes hip hop and rap, I kid you not. Some like classical, sometimes babies like the bass up HIGH so they can feel the beat, too

* put baby in comfy clothes for the car trip - you can stop 15 minutes before arrival and change them into oh-so-adorable outfit!

* take deep breaths if the crying becomes unbearable - and turn up the radio for you up front if you need to drown out crying

* singing silly songs helps baby - with hearing their voice

* i think your poopsie is under 20 pounds?! If so, remember to not turn around in unsafe places to check on the baby while driving (mine is 24 pounds and thus front-facing so I can just easily move the rearview mirror to spy on her).

HUGS!!!
